A passport and a certified copy are different
GOV.UK identifies copies of passports and driving licences as documents that can be legalised after appropriate certification. Do not send your original travel document for legalisation without first discussing the actual requirement.
Check what must appear on the copy
Ask whether the recipient needs the photograph page, signature page or other pages, and whether the copy must be in colour. If it supplies a specific certificate or identity form, send the complete instructions before the appointment.
Provide identity evidence through the agreed channel
A notary or solicitor must decide what checks are needed before certifying. Initial enquiries should describe the requirement; provide detailed identity material only through the method agreed with the practice.
Choose the delivery format
Where an eligible electronic certification is appropriate, the electronic route may be considered. Otherwise arrange paper certification and legalisation. The receiving organisation’s requirements should be settled before either route is booked.
Common questions
Can I certify my own passport copy?
Self-certification does not replace the professional certification required for the UK legalisation route described on GOV.UK.
Does an apostille replace identity checks?
No. Identity checking, certification and legalisation are different parts of the process.
