Get the document type right
Provide the full name of the requested record and the issuing body when you enquire. Also share any age-of-document requirement given by the recipient. A correctly legalised document can still be unsuitable if it is the wrong type of check.
Electronic-route exclusions apply
GOV.UK excludes ACRO and DBS certificates for England and Wales, disclosure certificates for Scotland and Northern Ireland, and fingerprint certificates from its e-Apostille route. Discuss preparation for a paper apostille instead.
Check preparation before submission
Certificate formats and signature requirements can matter. Show the instructions and describe the certificate you hold so the appropriate preparation can be checked. Avoid adding handwritten notes, altering or laminating the record.
Work backwards from the filing date
Allow for obtaining the record, any preparation, legalisation and delivery abroad. If the recipient specifies that the record must be recent, plan the sequence so it remains within that window when submitted.
Common questions
Can a DBS certificate be e-apostilled?
No. The published UK e-Apostille exclusions include DBS certificates for England and Wales.
Will an apostille make a DBS acceptable where ACRO was requested?
No. Legalisation does not change the type or contents of the police record. Check the request before proceeding.
